Dead Pixel vs Stuck Pixel
Learn the difference between dead pixels, stuck pixels, hot pixels and dust before deciding whether to return, repair or keep a screen.

A dead pixel usually stays black or dark because it no longer lights correctly. A stuck pixel stays bright or colored, often red, green, blue or white. Clean the panel and compare the same spot on several solid colors before deciding which type you see.
How the defects look
Dead pixels are easiest to see on white and other bright backgrounds. Stuck or hot pixels are easier to see on black because they remain lit while the surrounding screen is dark.
Common false positives
Dust, lint, a screen protector mark, a camera cutout or a small scratch can look like a pixel defect. A mark on the surface may change after cleaning or when viewed from another angle; a panel pixel stays in the same physical position.
Repair and return decisions
A browser cannot repair a true dead pixel or certify a hardware defect. Some stuck pixels may respond to a limited flashing-color attempt, but results are not guaranteed. For a new device, document repeatable defects and check the return or pixel policy promptly.
How to verify it
- Clean the screen and set a comfortable, normal brightness.
- Check white, black, red, green and blue fullscreen backgrounds.
- Confirm that the mark remains in exactly the same position on every color.
- Photograph repeatable defects and review the seller or manufacturer policy.
