Why Does My Monitor Have Color Banding?
Find common causes of monitor color banding, including color depth, gradients, HDR settings, browser behavior, GPU output and panel limitations.
Quick answer
Monitor color banding can come from limited color depth, compressed source content, HDR tone mapping, GPU output, display modes or panel limitations. Compare several gradients and normal photos before deciding that the monitor is defective.

Rule out the source image
A compressed image or video can contain banding before it reaches the screen. Compare browser-generated gradients with high-quality photos and another browser or source.
Check the signal and display mode
HDR, output range, bit depth, cable bandwidth and aggressive contrast modes can change gradient smoothness. Change one setting at a time.
Know what a browser can prove
An online gradient test supports visual comparison but cannot measure panel bit depth or color accuracy. Persistent strong bands in real content deserve deeper hardware and signal-path testing.
How to verify it
- Open grayscale and color gradients fullscreen.
- Compare another browser and high-quality real images.
- Test HDR, color depth, output range and monitor picture mode one at a time.
- Check another cable or source if strong banding remains in real content.
