Why Is My Laptop Screen Showing Black Spots?
A troubleshooting guide for black spots on laptop screens, including dead pixels, dust, pressure marks, liquid damage and panel defects.
Quick answer
A tiny fixed black spot may be a dead pixel, while a larger dark patch can come from dust, pressure damage, liquid exposure or a panel-layer fault. Clean the surface and compare the same spot on several solid colors before deciding what it is.

Tiny dots and larger patches mean different things
A single dark pixel remains in one physical position and is easiest to confirm on white and bright colors. A smudge, cloud or expanding black area is less likely to be one pixel and may indicate physical panel damage.
Rule out surface marks
Dust, lint, scratches and screen-protector debris can resemble black pixels. A surface mark may change after cleaning or with viewing angle; a panel defect remains fixed under the same test.
Know when to stop testing
Do not press or massage a black patch. If it is growing, follows an impact, shows ink-like spreading or appears with lines, turn the device off and contact qualified support.
How to verify it
- Clean the screen gently and remove obvious protector debris.
- Check white, red, green, blue and gray fullscreen backgrounds.
- Note whether the mark is a single dot, a cluster or a larger patch.
- Document repeatable damage and contact the seller or repair provider.
